For the first time in 3 decades, the Senate passed a major piece of gun safety legislation. The bill, which passed on bipartisan grounds late Thursday, enhances background checks for firearm purchasers who are under 21, creates incentives for states to implement stronger red flag laws, closes the ‘boyfriend loophole’ which allowed unmarried partners of domestic violence survivors to buy guns, and sets aside funding for mental health & school security initiatives.
The bill is expected to breeze through the Democratically-controlled House and go to President Biden’s desk as early as Friday.
