Colombian airport staff caught two German men attempting to smuggle out 210 plastic containers filled with 232 tarantulas, nine spider eggs, and a scorpion with seven of its young, as well as 67 roaches.
After live cargo was detected in their suitcases, authorities located the insects inside packages of rocks and rolls of film. The men claimed they were transporting the creatures for study in Germany, but lacked the necessary permits. Both have been charged with crimes and are being prosecuted in the Colombian judicial system.
Colombia is a wildlife trafficking hot spot, with tens of thousands of species calling the country home.
