Hundreds of Protesters Storm Iraqi Parliament
1 min read
Hundreds of protesters overtook the Iraqi parliament on July 27, as the country approaches 300 days without a functional government. According to Reuters, Iraq’s government has been unable to choose a new president or prime minister since the October 2021 elections, due to ‘infighting among Shi’ite and Kurdish groups.’
The supporters who stormed parliament on Wednesday are supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr, a popular Shi’ite cleric whose parliamentary bloc of 70+ MPs had previously resigned in June in protest of the ongoing impasse.
