A newly discovered version of the first on-screen kiss between two Black actors has surfaced at the National Library of Norway. Although a first version of the kiss was revealed in 2017, the National Library of Norway says this version is ‘more complex’ and shows a playful, tender lead-up to the series of kisses from a camera set up farther away. The 1898 film directed by William Selig, called ‘Something Good – Negro Kiss,’ was groundbreaking for the time, showing a compassionate depiction of a Black couple, rather than a caricature based on racist tropes that was popular at the time.
