Endangered Komodo Dragons Hatch at San Antonio Zoo

2 min read

Dragon up! The San Antonio Zoo captured a timelapse of endangered Komodo dragons being hatched.

10 babies were successfully hatched between October 17 and 27, including two males, four females, and four dragons whose sex have not yet been determined. Komodo dragons, one of the largest lizards in the world, were downgraded from vulnerable to endangered in September. Fewer than 1,400 mature lizards remain worldwide, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

‘This monumental hatching is a testament to the zoo’s persistence and commitment to conservation,’ said Tim Morrow, president and CEO of San Antonio Zoo, in a press statement. ‘The hatchlings are thriving, and we are looking forward to watching them grow and help preserve the existence of Komodo dragons.’
