This Brooklyn essentials drive provided thousands of clothing items and hundreds of bags of food to the community — and it was all thanks to Playground Coffee Shop and Nuevayorkinos.

Zenat Begum and Djali Brown-Cepeda hosted an essentials drive called Power to the People at the Playground Coffee Shop in Brooklyn, New York.
‘Mutual aid needs to exist all the time and not just during a crisis,’ Zenat explains. ‘This is us trying to help our community before it gets to an alarming point.’
The drive provided 200 to 300 families with clothing, food, medicine, hygiene supplies, and books.
As women of color from immigrant families, Djali says she and Zenat understand ‘the importance of the network and the importance of interconnectivity.’
Zenat’s Playground Coffee Shop has a community fridge and mini library that have served as important resources for the Bed-Stuy neighborhood. Meanwhile, Djali’s Nuevayorkinos is working to preserve New York City Latinx culture and history.
